The Portugieser originated in the late 1930s, when IWC Schaffhausen used a precise pocket watch movement to create a large, accurate wristwatch. First introduced in 2000, the Portugieser Automatic 42 has a balanced, open dial with a power reserve indicator at 3 o'clock and small seconds at 9 o'clock. This version showcases a 42.4-millimeter stainless steel case, blue dial, rhodium-plated hands and appliqués, and a thinner casing ring with box-glass sapphire crystals. The beautifully crafted dial goes through 60 carefully executed steps, including 15 layers of transparent lacquer that are polished to a high gloss. The subdials are intricately milled into the brass and lacquer, with a special printing process for a three-dimensional effect. Each appliqué is hand-mounted on the dial.
