The Portugieser Automatic 42 by IWC Schaffhausen has its beginnings in the late 1930s when a high-precision pocket watch movement was utilized to create a large wristwatch with exceptional chronometer accuracy. Introduced in 2000, this version boasts an open, well-balanced dial with a power reserve indicator at 3 o'clock and small seconds at 9 o'clock. It features a 42.4 millimeter 18-carat 5N gold case, Obsidian dial, and gold-plated hands and appliques. The elegant and sophisticated appearance is achieved through a revamped case construction with a thinner casing ring and box-glass sapphire crystals on both the front and back. The dial is a work of art, created through a meticulous 60-step process involving 15 layers of transparent lacquer, polished to a glossy finish.
