The origins of the Portugieser can be traced back to the 1930s, where IWC Schaffhausen transformed an accurate pocket watch movement into a large wristwatch with chronometer precision. Featuring a 42mm stainless steel case, this version of the Portugieser Automatic was first introduced in 2000 and boasts a balanced open dial with a power reserve indicator at 3 o'clock and a small seconds display at 9 o'clock. The silver-plated dial, blue hands, and appliqués add an elegant touch to the watch. Its redesigned case construction, with a thinner casing ring and box-glass sapphire crystals on both sides, exudes sophistication. The dial itself is a work of art, made through a meticulous process of applying 15 layers of transparent lacquer and mounting the appliqués by hand.
