The Portugieser's history can be traced back to the 1930s, when IWC Schaffhausen utilized a high-precision pocket watch movement to create a uniquely large wristwatch with chronometer precision. With an open, balanced dial, this version of the Portugieser was first introduced in 2000 and features a power reserve indicator at 3 o'clock and a small seconds display at 9 o'clock. The stainless steel case measures 42.4 millimeters in diameter, while the silver-plated dial is adorned with gold-plated hands and appliqués. Noteworthy design elements include a redesigned case with a thinner casing ring and box-glass sapphire crystals on both the front and back. The meticulously crafted dial, produced through a complex process involving 60 individual steps, boasts 15 layers of transparent lacquer that lend it a unique optical depth. The subdials are milled into both the brass blank and the lacquer layer, adding to the three-dimensional

Technical information about this watch
IWC Schaffhausen Portugieser Automatic 42
50M / 5 ATM water resistance
Water resistance indicates a watch's ability to withstand moisture and water. Ratings are measured in metres (M) or atmospheres (ATM). For instance, 30M (3 ATM) is suitable for light splashes, while 100M (10 ATM) and above are ideal for swimming and diving. Regular maintenance helps retain water resistance over time.
IWC Calibre 52011 Automatic movement
Watch movements are the mechanisms that power timekeeping, coming in automatic, manual, and quartz types. Automatic movements self-wind using wrist motion, manual movements require hand-winding, and quartz movements are battery-powered for precise timekeeping. Each type offers unique benefits, catering to different preferences and lifestyles.
42mm case size
Case size, measured in millimetres (mm), impacts the watch's look and fit. Men's watches typically range from 38mm to 46mm, and women's from 26mm to 36mm. Larger cases make a bold statement, while smaller cases offer a classic look. Choosing the right size ensures comfort and style.
168 hours power reserve
Power reserve is the duration a watch runs on a full wind or charge. Mechanical watches usually offer 40 to 80 hours, with some extending to several days. Quartz watches, powered by batteries, last several years. Knowing the power reserve helps maintain accurate timekeeping.
